Our Story

Founded by Katie and Mark Hale on their return from an assignment in the Caribbean, Spec began as a small, local, cleaning firm. Together they grew the business into a multi-faceted services company delivering not only domestic but commercial, industrial and construction cleaning services to the public sector, private and broader industry.

Spec’s growth and training policy is developed around succession planning. Having said this, the company understands that to grow profitably it is sometimes necessary to acquire certain skills from outside. Successful candidates often have a retail or hospitality background – they understand how to lead in a dynamic and busy environment and to deliver great customer service.

One important initiative currently under development is the integration of an Indigenous Procurement Policy (IPP). This policy utilises current governmental affirmative action to employ, train, coach and mentor Indigenous candidates into and through a developmental program, designed to upskill those employees to a level whereby they are better equipped to take their next career steps.

In order to meet our clients’ high standards, our team is rigorously selected and inducted ensuring each member is adequately trained, well-presented, well-mannered and including the completion of the relevant security assessments prior to employment.

Development of our people has been pivotal to the consistently high levels of service that Spec provides. Since incorporation, we have shown a significant commitment to maintaining the correct staff / supervisory / management ratio so as to deliver a consistently measurable, quality result. Our targeted staff training programs are integral to the continued progression of the general team and, as such, succession planning becomes a critical module of the HR function. Our key personnel draw together a range of skills to form a strong and cohesive integrated management team.

With a focus on quality assurance and client relations, Katie aims for an exceptional level of service and development across all company departments. Katie’s vision is to develop Spec Services into a National Brand recognised for quality service and as an employer of choice.

Operational Manager Mark Hale, has over 15 years’ experience working for high profile clients in a professional cleaning and asset management capacity. With experience in human resources, project and contract management and facilities maintenance for portfolios ranging from $3-$100 million dollars, Mark is also experienced in WHS management, implementation, and auditing. Mark can always be found on site providing feedback, training and sharing best practice with the team.

Mike came to Spec Services with an extensive international background in business, with a particular focus on innovative and disruptive business practice, startups, growth, and expansion. Mike has had a successful career in services, tourism, logistics and hospitality in the US, Europe and Australia. Mike is an IRC member and chairs the Industry Advisory Committee and has sat on and advised many panels including the PMs Australian Competitiveness Agenda. He is also a member of the Apprenticeships Reform Advisory Group. Mike is passionate about managing the future business diversification for Spec Services.

Ann joined Spec in early 2020 having spent 20 years managing retail businesses such as Boost Juice Bars, L’Occitane and Jurlique International. Known for building highly successful teams with operational efficiency and a positive culture, Ann also developed and implemented operating systems and protocols including store and site development globally. As a part of the senior management team, Ann’s role will be to design and implement the required systems and personnel in preparation for the company to move on to a national portfolio.

Sam brings a wealth of experience to the Spec team across retail and asset management with a focus on the recruitment, induction and performance management of people. Having over 20 years’ experience in managing large teams in diverse environments, Sam is a competent compliance manager having implemented health and safety policy and procedures for some of Australia’s largest retailers and shopping centers. Sam is passionate about creating safe workplaces through educating the team and creating a safety first culture.

Supported by both HappyHR and the MBA, with professionally implemented Industrial relations and WHS policies and procedures, Spec undergoes strict external WHS and compliance audits with the industry leaders – Contractor Compliance Australia, Government IRE certification and are CM3 Contractor pre-qualification.

Ensuring that all employees are fully inducted and trained is an integral part of our site specific, Risk Management Plan. As well as being an equal opportunity and best practice employer, we are constantly reviewing and improving our systems to achieve maximum efficiency in a safe environment.
